Boost Your Energy: Play Spikeball!

Ever heard of spikeball? This very intense game has been quite the sensation in the United States. Right now, spikeball is gaining in popularity throughout Europe, including the Netherlands. It is about time we introduce you to the game. No worries, it doesn’t take much to play spikeball: a hoop, a net, a ball and… a can or bottle of Nightwatch!

Spikeball is pretty similar to volleyball. Instead of hitting the ball over a net, you hit the ball directly into one. The net is stretched tightly over a round plastic rim, giving the ball a nice bounce when it hits. The game is usually played by two teams of two players. The object of the game? Hit the ball into the net in a manner where the opposing team cannot return it. Each team is allowed up to three touches to return the ball. If they cannot return the ball, the serving team gets a point. All clear? Let’s play!

5 tips every spikeballer should know:


  1. Practice on different surfaces Sand, grass, concrete: you name it. Learning how each surface reacts to your movements will give you a leg up on your opponent.
     
  2. Use your offhand Start to build your offhand skillset! If you are able to serve and return shots with both hands, you will strike fear in your opponents.
     
  3. Find the right partner Make sure your teammate is as dedicated to spikeball as you are. Together with someone who is equally as interested in the same goal, you will reach the next level.
     
  4. Never do what your opponent is expecting you to do If you’re on defence and your opponent has an awesome smash, fake a step back. Bait them into a drop shot and steal a point.
