There you sit, in the middle of a boxing ring. Focused on a chessboard with noise-cancelling headphones on. Drops of sweat fall from your nose onto your rook. After a round of boxing, with a heart rate 165, you try to think of your master move. Will you take his pawn? The blow on your jaw still echoes. The clock is ticking. Think fast. Not easy. All the blood is still in your muscles, so the lack of oxygen in your head doesn't help. Welcome to a game of chess boxing.
Who comes up with a sport where you have to physically go all the way and at the same time keep your brains for strategic choices? It was the Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh who invented the sport and introduced it in 2003. He boxed and played chess for the first time ever against a friend, who was also fascinated by both sports. Because that's what you have to meet as a chess boxer. You need to have a pretty basic level in both sports to not get knocked out by a corner or knocked off in the corner of your board. The sport now has more than 3000 fanatic practitioners from all over the world.
Chess boxing takes place in a ring and consists of six chess rounds and five boxing rounds. The game starts with a chess round and each round lasts three minutes. There is a one minute break between each round for putting on and taking off the boxing gloves and headphones. The game of chess is rapid chess in which each player has a reflection time of a maximum of 12 seconds. A match ends via checkmate, knock-out, a jury decision or exceeding the reflection time.
There is something mystical about a Chess boxing event. The fighters are well-trained but classy. The style is unprecedented as they prepare a tactical move with the greatest control and focus, while they just attacked their opponent with a lot of power. And the atmosphere in the hall is always electrically charged and special. The next match in the Netherlands will be in Paradiso, the pop temple with a lot of creative soul. There the spotlight will soon wander to the doorway where special fighters are welcomed one by one by lovers of this sport.
